Apple Store vs Retailers: Where should you buy your next Apple product?

You might assume the best place to buy a new Mac or iPhone is straight from the source. I recently spoke to a friend who bought a brand new iPhone 14 Pro. She skipped the Apple Store entirely and went to a third-party retailer instead.

Her reason was simple. It was cheaper.

That sparked some deep research into the best ways to buy Apple gear. There are plenty of reasons to buy directly from Apple, but just as many reasons to hit up a retailer like Amazon, Target, or Best Buy. Let's compare the two options.

Buying directly from Apple

When you buy straight from Apple online or in-store, you get three distinct advantages.

First is customization. You get full access to every specific color option for products like the AirPods Max or the newest iPhone. You can also easily lock in the exact storage capacity that suits your needs.

Second is cash back. If you check out using your Apple Card, you get a 3% cash back benefit. Apple products are not cheap. That 3% really adds up if you buy multiple devices over the years.

Finally, you get a seamless trade-in experience. Swapping out your old devices directly with Apple is smooth and incredibly convenient compared to juggling third-party trade-in sites.

The perks of buying from a retailer

Places like Walmart, Amazon, Target, and Best Buy offer some serious benefits that Apple simply does not match.

The biggest draw is the discount. Retailers buy Apple products in massive bulk quantities. This earns them a wholesale discount of roughly 10%. They pass a lot of those savings directly to you at checkout.

You can also leverage retailer subscriptions. If you have Amazon Prime, you already get blazing-fast shipping and other platform-specific perks without paying extra.

Then there is the return policy. Apple gives you a 30-day return window. Some retailers completely blow that out of the water by offering a 90-day return policy.

Retailers also get very competitive with extras. Some actually offer Apple Care for free when you buy a device through them. You will also spot special gift card promos during holiday sales. Because these massive stores carry endless third-party accessories, you can easily find bundled discounts on cases, chargers, and screen protectors.

The secret behind Amazon's Apple deals

Amazon is a special case in the retail world. They have been a certified partner of Apple since 2018.

This exclusive partnership lets Amazon sell Apple products at prices way lower than most other retailers. At certain times, Amazon might actually be losing money on the Apple device itself.

They do this because of upselling. When you add an iPhone to your cart, Amazon hits you with a Frequently bought together section. They recommend third-party cases, extra cables, and car mounts. Those cheap accessories carry huge profit margins. That is where Amazon actually makes its money back.

The bottom line

Apple has a highly structured retail strategy. They know exactly how to work with their partners so that everybody wins.

If you want a very specific custom build, the absolute easiest trade-in process, or you want to maximize your Apple Card cash back, buy directly from Apple.

If you are hunting for the lowest upfront price, an extended return window, or cheap accessory bundles, a certified retailer is absolutely the way to go.
