What's new in the AirPods Max refresh
It took Apple four years, but the new AirPods Max are finally here. If you've been holding onto your wallet waiting for the next generation of Apple's over-ear headphones, the wait is over. However, the reaction so far has been a bit mixed.
Some people are thrilled about the fresh look, while others are scratching their heads at what didn't change. It's a unique update that brings some welcome modern standards but leaves the core experience largely the same
In this post, we're breaking down the 7 key things you need to know about this refresh. From hidden hardware details to the software features you might be missing out on, here is the full scoop.
New look, new port
The most obvious change right out of the box is the aesthetic. Apple has dropped five new colors for this refresh. You can now pick these up in Orange, Purple, Blue, Midnight, and Starlight.
But the bigger news for many of you is at the bottom of the ear cup. The AirPods Max finally support USB-C. No more hunting for a Lightning cable when you need a charge. But there is a tiny detail here that most people miss.

If you look closely inside the charging port, you'll see that the USB-C port is actually color-matched to the headphones. It's a small touch, but it shows that classic Apple attention to detail.
Why they aren't called AirPods Max 2
You might have noticed that Apple doesn't officially refer to these as "AirPods Max 2." There is a specific reason for that. This new model is still powered by the older H1 chip, rather than the newer H2 chip found in the AirPods Pro 2.
Because the silicon hasn't been upgraded, the processing power remains the same as the model released four years ago. This decision impacts which software features these headphones can actually support.
What you're missing out on
Since these are sticking with the H1 chip, you won't get some of the smarter audio features that have rolled out to the Pro line. If you were hoping for the full suite of modern AirPods capabilities, you should know what isn't included:
- Conversation Awareness: The headphones won't automatically lower volume when you start speaking
- Adaptive Audio: You don't get the mode that blends transparency and noise cancellation dynamically
- Personalized Volume: The system won't learn your listening habits over time
- Loud Sound Reduction: There is no automatic protection against sudden loud noises in transparency mode

What stayed the same
Outside of the colors and the charging port, the rest of the package is remarkably similar to the original launch.
- The Price: It stays at $549. There was no price drop or increase with this refresh
- The Case: Unfortunately, we still have the same Smart Case. It offers minimal protection, though it's still the only way to put the headphones into low-power sleep mode
- Audio Quality: Because the drivers and microphones haven't changed, the sound profile and call quality are identical to the previous generation

The verdict
If you don't have a pair of AirPods Max yet and you want the best over-ear experience Apple offers, these are now your go-to option with the convenience of USB-C. The new colors look great, and the color-matched port is a nice touch.
However, if you already own the original pair, you aren't missing out on upgraded audio quality or new smart features. This is primarily a cosmetic refresh to get the lineup onto USB-C.
